Music, culture highlight Black history on radio

Local public radio celebrates Black History Month with a wide range of programming.

On classical WQED-FM (89.3), this week's edition of "Pittsburgh Foundation Performance in Pittsburgh" features "An African-American Heritage Month Special: Denyce Graves in Concert at Carnegie Music Hall," with the Rev. Harold Lewis of Calvary Episcopal Church as host (10 p.m. Wednesday).

Also on WQED:

"Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." is a two-hour musical tribute from Chicago's WFMT (11 p.m. Feb. 18).

"Classically Black: The Creole Romantics" is a PRI special on 19th-century African-American composers Charles Lucien Lambert Sr., Lucien-Leon Guillaume Lambert Jr. and Edmond Dede (midnight Feb. 25).

"The Anderson Little Report" on WDUQ-FM (90.5) -- which airs Sundays at 6 p.m. -- will focus on several aspects of African-American history and culture:

"World War II and the Segregated Military" (tomorrow).

"WDIA: The First Black Radio Station" -- A look at the first station programmed for the black community (Feb. 15).

The self-governed community of Mound Bayou, Miss. (Feb. 22).

"Legendary Black Cowboy Bill Pickett" (Feb. 29).

WYEP-FM (91.3) will carry a one-hour special, "Black History in Live Performance: A Mountain Stage Celebration 2004," at 5 p.m. Feb. 15, with performances by jazz and blues artists, including Joshua Redman, Ruth Brown, Charles Brown, Buckwheat Zydeco and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

WYEP's "Discumentaries" series (airing at 5 p.m.) is showcasing recordings by several influential musicians on Mondays and Wednesdays: Ben Harper's "Welcome to the Cruel World" (Monday), Otis Redding's "Otis Blue" (Wednesday), Buddy Guy's "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" (Feb. 16), Massive Attack's "Blue Lines" (Feb. 18), Arrested Development's "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of..." (Feb. 23) and Robert Cray's "Strong Persuader" (Feb. 25).
