Radio Note: WWCS to change format

Thursday, February 08, 2001

By Adrian McCoy, Post-Gazette staff writer

A format change is in the works at WWCS-AM (540) in Canonsburg.

Owner Cema Birach and his son, Cema Birach Jr., say the station is not being sold, but speculation in the radio community points to a local marketing agreement with Disney and/or ESPN. Neither of the Birachs would elaborate on programming changes.

Representatives for Radio Disney declined comment, as did station staffers.

WWCS has tried several formats of late, with only its weekend ethnic and music programs surviving. In November, it dropped its weekday World Radio Network satellite programming, switching briefly to a big band format. A month later, it went to a locally programmed '50s and '60s pre-Beatles oldies format, with jazz in the mornings.
