Jane Elizabeth Zemel

Jane Elizabeth Zemel, 43, local news editor for education, joined the PG five years ago. A graduate of Radford (Va.) University, she also holds a master's degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1978-1994, she worked for newspapers in Richmond, Va., where she won numerous state and national awards for reporting on education and other issues. She was awarded a fellowship last year from the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland. Steve Twedt

Steve Twedt, a special projects writer for the Post-Gazette, recently returned from a year with the Michigan Journalism Fellows program in Ann Arbor. He has previously written about schools' difficulties educating medically fragile children, the risks to patients as hospitals restructure their staffs, and hospital medication errors. Among his honors are the Associated Press Managing Editors' national public service award and the American Academy of Nursing's national media award. Twedt, 45, was also a member of the Longview (Wash.) Daily News staff awarded the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for General Local Reporting for its coverage of the Mount St. Helens eruptions.
