New faces in the PSO

Friday, September 15, 2000

By Andrew Druckenbrod, Post-Gazette Classical Music Critic

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra welcomes four new faces -- three permanent and one temporary -- to its ranks for the 2000-2001 season. Violinists Amy Kauffman and Dennis O'Boyle will take up desks in the second violin section, while Robert Lauver will join the PSO's horn section. To these permanent positions is added cellist Margo Tatgenhorst. She substitutes for associate principal Lauren Scott Mallory, who is taking a sabbatical leave.

The musicians each come from high pedigree. Kauffman has a master's from the Juilliard School of Music where she held the Juilliard Orchestra's concertmaster position in 1999. Her bachelor's work took place at Indiana University, and she served as principal second violin there for the school's orchestra. She most recently was a member of the first violin section of the Houston Symphony.

Lauver, who studied at the Peabody Institute, has worked in the horn section of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra beginning in 1992. He also has played in the Baltimore Symphony and Columbus Symphony. He attended Northwestern and Western Michigan universities.

O'Boyle graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Manhattan School of Music. He has played in the New World Symphony and the Boulder Philharmonic.

Tatgenhorst was previously the principal cellist of the Oregon Symphony.
