Sunday, August 31, 2003

Tom Waseleski, a member of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's editorial board for the past 13 years, has been named editorial page editor effective tomorrow.

The promotion was announced by publisher and editor-in-chief John Robinson Block.

"Tom has deep roots in Pittsburgh," Block said. "He understands this region and its people -- and he has sharp insights on the world outside southwestern Pennsylvania. The Post-Gazette has maintained a strong, independent voice on its editorial page, and Tom will help us continue that tradition."

Waseleski replaces Michael McGough, who will become an editor-at-large, applying his special expertise in national affairs, including the Supreme Court.

"Michael McGough has served the Post-Gazette well for 18 years as editorial page editor and will continue to do so in his new assignment," Block said.

Waseleski's history at the newspaper includes assignments as state reporter and state editor, overseeing the paper's bureaus in Harrisburg and Washington. In addition to his writing duties on the editorial board, he has co-produced the weekly public affairs shows, "KD/PG Sunday Edition" at KDKA-TV and, "The Editors" at WQED-TV.

He's a board member of the National Conference of Editorial Writers and a past president of the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors.

His writing has won numerous local, state and national awards.
