TODAY (Thursday)

DOWNTOWN -- Leaders of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities will preside at an interfaith service for peace at noon in Market Square. Attending will be Pittsburgh Catholic Bishop Donald Wuerl and Mayor Tom Murphy.

PETERS --- Peters Township School District is sponsoring a blood drive from 1 to 8 p.m. at Center Presbyterian Church.

PENN HILLS -- Penn Hills High School and municipal officials have organized a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the auditorium lobby of the high school, 12200 Garland Drive.


DOWNTOWN -- The Pittsburgh Downtown Ministerium will hold a prayer service for the people of the world at 12:15 p.m. in Smithfield United Church, 620 Smithfield St. Allegheny County Chief Executive Jim Roddey and Mayor Tom Murphy are scheduled to speak.


MARS -- Mars Area School District sports teams will hold a disaster relief fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mars Area High School, 520 Route 228. All donations from the car wash and bake sale will go to the Salvation Army. Call 724-360-3363.

CRANBERRY -- A benefit concert with games and a raffle will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. at Cranberry Commons Shopping Center on Route 228. The event, featuring Johnny Angel & The Halos and sponsored by 3WS Radio and Quaker Steak & Lube, will include a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and an American car cruise.

SOUTH SIDE -- An evening of poetry and music at Club Cafe, 12th Street near Carson Street, will be held from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The event is sponsored by HEArt (Human Equity through Art) and the literary journal Yawp. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.

HILL DISTRICT -- The Greater Pittsburgh Council Boy Scouts of America, along with Mayor Tom Murphy and others, will hold a flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m. at the GPC Flag Plaza headquarters, 1275 Bedford Ave. A reception with hot dogs and apple pie will follow, courtesy of Giant Eagle.
