Real Food for Cats: Tuna Cakes
2 eggs
- 6-ounce can tuna, drained and flaked (we used water-packed albacore)
- 4 slices bread, cubed into kitty-bite-size pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon iodized salt
- 1 teaspoon brewer's yeast, see notes
- 1 teaspoon bonemeal, see notes
- 2 tablespoons margarine
Beat eggs lightly in a bowl. Add the tuna, bread cubes, salt, brewer's yeast and bonemeal. Mix thoroughly until moistened.
Form into small patties (we made ours about 2 inches in diameter). Melt the margarine in a skillet and fry the patties over medium heat until golden brown. When cool, crumble each patty and serve. Makes 3 to 5 kitty servings.
Notes: Brewer's yeast, a great source of high-quality protein and vitamins, is widely available in health food stores. Bonemeal, a good source of calcium, is hard to find. Most health-food stores can order it for you. Or you can substitute calcium carbonate or TUMS tablets, crushed.
