June 23, 1586 East Coast: Roanoke Island Hurricane: Sir Francis Drake ran into this storm off Roanoke Island. The storm lasted three days and the settlers were frightened by the thunderstorm with hail the size of hen's eggs and great spouts at the sea. Drake had to evacuate the settlers back to England.
June 23, 1976 Philadelphia, PA: Plane crash injures 87; was caused by "microburst" in thunderstorm (65 knots head wind to 20 knots tail wind).
