Radio Notes: KDKA's Honsberger up for award

Thursday, February 26, 2004

By Adrian McCoy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

KDKA-AM (1020) afternoon talk host Fred Honsberger is one of six finalists for trade publication Radio & Records' local talk host of the year award. Winners will be announced this weekend at the R&R Talk Radio Seminar in Washington, D.C.

The R&R awards recognize achievement in the talk radio format, with categories for local and syndicated talk hosts, stations, programmers and managers.

Nominees for syndicated host of the year are Glenn Beck, Dr. Joy Browne, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Dave Ramsey and Michael Savage.

Richert honored

KDKA morning host Larry Richert will be honored this weekend. Richert will receive the Richard S. Caliguiri Award for community service at this year's Pittsburgh Men & Women of the Year Awards, which will be presented Saturday.

Live music

WYEP-FM will present another in its "WYEP Live From Club Cafe" series of live broadcasts at Saturday's show by blues/roots band The Holmes Brothers at Club Cafe.

The hourlong set starts at 8 p.m. and will also be streamed on the station Web site, www.wyep.org.

The next edition of "WYEP Live From Club Cafe" will feature The Clarks on March 15.

Sunday's concert by the Carnegie Mellon Chamber Orchestra will be broadcast live on WQED-FM (89.3) at 8 p.m. Ted Sohier will host the broadcast.

The performance features Pittsburgh Symphony concertmaster Andres Cardenes conducting, and as soloist in David Stock's "The Philosopher's Stone."

Leap year baby

Clarinetist Jimmy Dorsey was one of those leap year babies. He would have turned 100 -- or 25, depending on how you look at it -- on Feb. 29, 2004. WDUQ-FM's (90.5) "Rhythm Sweet and Hot" is marking the occasion with a tribute to Dorsey's life and work. Hosts Mike Plaskett and Ken Crawford will talk about Dorsey and play many of his recordings.

"Jimmy Dorsey's 25th Leap Year Birthday Celebration" airs Saturday from 9 p.m. to midnight.

"Rhythm Sweet & Hot" is devoted to music of the 1920s through the '40s, and is now syndicated on more than 30 stations.
