Radio Notes: Comedy show to take Quinn's spot on WRRK

Saturday, December 20, 2003

By Adrian McCoy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Classic rock WRRK-FM (96.9) will debut a new morning show on Jan. 5. It's "The Bob and Tom Show," a nationally syndicated morning show.

The comedy-based show features hosts Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold and originates at WFBQ-FM in Indianapolis. Though it's heard in several other markets in the state, including Erie and Johnstown, this marks its Pittsburgh debut.

The show, which will air from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, replaces departing morning host Jim Quinn, who's moving to morning drive on new talk station WPGB-FM (104.7).

Charity drive

WEDO-AM (810) host Gary Greisinger (known on the air as Gary G.) is conducting his annual Christmas toy and blanket drive. He traditionally collects toys, blankets, coats and clothing, which are distributed to children in local shelters.

This year, he established the Cathy G. Charities in honor of his daughter Cathy, 27, who died in a fire at her home in Pitcairn in May.

Cathy Greisinger also was active in charity work and helped with her father's "Blanket Brigade" drives. Greisinger says he set up the charity in her name to continue helping others. Funds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Children's Hospital Free Care Fund, Blankets for the Homeless and others. He has also set up a Web site -- cathygcharities.com.

Greisinger will broadcast live on WEDO from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday to drum up additional support for the drive.

Anyone wanting to donate can call 412-373-5687.

Schedule changes

Talk station WPTT-AM (1360) will have some schedule changes next week for the holiday, including guest fill-in hosts.

On Monday, former PCNC "NightTalk" host John McIntire will fill in for Jerry Bowyer (7 to 10 a.m.), and outgoing Allegheny County Chief Executive Jim Roddey for Doug Hoerth (3 to 6 p.m.). The station will have other fill-in hosts throughout the week when its regular hosts take time off for the holidays.

Doug Hoerth's show will air two hours earlier -- from 1 to 4 p.m on Jan. 2 and 5, with fill-in guest hosts from 4 to 6 p.m.

Regular programming resumes Jan. 6.

Onorato on the air

Starting Jan. 8, news/talk KDKA-AM (1020) will launch a monthly call-in session -- "Ask the County Executive" with incoming County Chief Executive Dan Onorato. Onorato will take calls and answer listeners' questions during the Mike Pintek show on the second Thursday of the month from 10 to 11 a.m.

KDKA program director Steve Hansen calls it an "opportunity for county residents to take ownership of their government" and an example of the station's commitment to the region.

'A Christmas Carol'

KDKA also will debut a new holiday tradition next week. On Christmas Eve, the station will air a modern-day adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," starring a cast of KDKA news and talk personalities -- Larry Richert, Fred Honsberger, Bob Kopler, Mike Pintek and John Cigna.

The station will air the feature about every four hours during its holiday break -- 36 hours of Christmas music starting Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. The first "Christmas Carol" broadcast is scheduled for 6 p.m. that day.

Holiday music

Renda Broadcasting's three stations also will celebrate the season with all-Christmas music. WSHH-FM (99.7) continues its longtime tradition of 36 hours of Christmas music, commercial-free. Sister stations WJAS-AM (1320) and WPTT-AM (1360) will air Christmas music as well. All three will start at noon Wednesday, running through midnight Thursday.

WWSW-FM (94.5), which has been all-Christmas since mid-November, will continue Christmas music through Thursday.
