Let it glow! From Jimmy Stewart to Ruben Studdard, here comes a blizzard of holiday TV

Thursday, November 27, 2003

By Rosa Colucci, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Hey Boomers, close your eyes for just a sec and you might hear Andy Williams warbling those wonderful old carols and tunes ...

Alan Zenuk/NBC
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and company star in "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie," airing at 9 p.m. Dec. 6 on NBC

It's the holiday season
And Santa Claus has got a toy
For every good girl and good little boy
He's a great big bundle of joy
He'll be coming down the chimney, down
Coming down the chimney, down.

Sadly, you won't be seeing -- or hearing -- Williams on the tube this year. Instead, those Gen-X minds that gave us "American Idol" are giving us a Christmas special with Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Kelly Clarkson and other favorites from the reality show. Creatively titled "An American Idol Christmas," it aired Tuesday but repeats at 9 p.m. Dec. 23 on Fox.

Time does march on.

Which brings us to this list -- the Post-Gazette's annual holiday programming guide. It'll help you plan your tube time for all those seasonal specials, from the classic "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original with Natalie Wood, airing at 2 p.m. today on NBC) to the marvelously retro "A Christmas Story" (airing multiple times on Christmas Day on TNT).

In between, you'll find Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen back at the inn for a "White Christmas"; Jimmy Stewart as banker George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life"; and even the 1938 version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," starring Reginald Owen.

And heck, if it's contemporary you want ... well, feel free to soak up the holiday splendor of MTV's "The Osbournes' Christmas."

But we'll lead you into the list with this closing thought:

On Christmas morning, grab some hot chocolate, settle into a cozy seat and tune into the Hallmark channel for five full hours of winter wonderland scenes, punctuated with great holiday music. Oh, and revel in the fact that it will be presented without commercial interruption. In this most commercial of seasons, count that as a blessing.

Happy holidays, TV fans ...
