'Big Brother' star hails from Meadville

Friday, July 04, 2003

by Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

CBS announced the identities of nine of the 13 contestants participating in the fourth edition of "Big Brother" yesterday, and one of them is from Western Pennsylvania.

Alison Irwin, 22, lists Meadville, Pa., as her hometown. She's single, has a boyfriend, attended the University of Pittsburgh and recently quit a job in retail management.

She lists Britney Spears as her personal hero. "The Golden Girls" is her favorite TV show, and "Shrek" is her favorite film. She plans to win "Big Brother" by "not lying, not cheating and not talking behind [other peoples'] backs," she wrote on a questionnaire for CBS's Web site. However, Irwin lists her weaknesses as having "a big mouth" and a tendency to "be bossy."

In the "reality" show "Big Brother," 13 people share a home constructed on a studio lot in Los Angeles for up to three months. They have no contact with the outside world, and 42 cameras and 56 microphones record everything they do 24 hours a day. Houseguests are evicted weekly, and the last remaining contestant will receive a $500,000 grand prize.

In this edition of "Big Brother," eight of the houseguests will be former couples, but it's not known yet which of the houseguests will have to share the home with an ex. That will be revealed in the season premiere at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
