Iraq crisis bumps Walters' Oscar show

Thursday, March 20, 2003

Scratch the Barbara Walters pre-Oscar show on Sunday.

ABC is postponing the annual special because of the potential war with Iraq. "With such serious issues facing the nation, it was the right decision," said Walters, who had interviewed nominees Nicolas Cage, Renee Zellweger and Julianne Moore.

ABC has made no decision on what will replace the celebrity special. It is still scheduled to begin its coverage of the 75th Academy Awards at 8 p.m., with the toned-down show hosted by Steve Martin at 8:30 p.m. Like all TV plans, however, that is subject to change. 'Star Search' auditions

CBS's "Star Search" is coming to Pittsburgh tomorrow to audition singers in the junior (solo performers ages 8 to 14 with no recording contracts or national TV solo appearances) and adult (15 and older, with same restrictions) categories. Auditions will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Omni William Penn, Downtown.

Applicants should be prepared to sing up to 90 seconds of one song a cappella. They also should bring a karaoke/instrumental CD and be ready to sing to it. They do not have to be the same selection.

Acts chosen to appear on the show will be flown to Los Angeles for the chance to compete on national TV and win a grand prize of $100,000. For more information, call the "Star Search" hot line at 1-800-553-3811. (B.V.)

Channel surfing

NBC is pulling "Let's Make a Deal" after three weeks because the game show failed to lure viewers from Fox's "American Idol" hit. Two remaining episodes will air at a later date. (B.V.)
