TV Note: Weekend weather forecasts won't originate from WPGH

Wednesday, January 22, 2003

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

Pittsburgh's Sinclair-owned WPGH will use a new weekend weather format beginning Saturday.

The move to so-called "centralcasting" means weekend weather reports will no longer originate from WPGH in Pittsburgh. Instead, Pittsburgh-specific forecasts will come from a centralized news operation at Sinclair's headquarters in Hunt Valley, Md.

Weekend weathercaster Pat Bridges will remain with Channel 53 as a fill-in for weekday meteorologist Matt Morano, but news director John Poister would not be more specific about her role beyond that.

Sinclair's corporate news director did not return a call seeking comment.

From its News Central facility, Sinclair offers full newscasts to stations in dozens of smaller markets that don't have their own local news operations. Weekend weather reports from News Central are being deployed to other Sinclair stations, including the NBC and Fox affiliates in Dayton, Ohio.
