A feast of holiday specials

Thursday, November 28, 2002

By Rosa Colucci, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

This year's holiday programming is sure to offer something for everyone. Families and singles alike will want to tear this out for safekeeping during those 25-plus days of holiday madness ... er, cheer!.

In "Miracle on 34th Street," the spirit of Christmas is rekindled in a young girl, played by Natalie Wood, and a department store Santa, portrayed by Edmund Gween, who causes a furor when he claims to be the real Kris Kringle. The 1947 movie airs at 2 p.m. today on NBC.

New twists on old favorites include "Rudolph's Shiny New Christmas" and "Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July." Also on the table, "Frosty Returns," and "Frosty's Winter Wonderland."

If music is your thing, catch "A Motown Christmas," hosted by D.L. Hughley and featuring Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Destiny's Child and India.Arie among others. It airs 8 p.m. Dec. 8 on USA. Classical fans won't want to miss "Celebration of Christmas," featuring the Vienna Symphony Orchestra with Jose Carreras, Natalie Cole and Placido Domingo in concert, 10 p.m. Dec. 22 on BRAVO.

A new holiday entry is "The Christmas Shoes." Based on a song, this story grew into a book and now a made-for-TV movie featuring Rob Lowe as a workaholic attorney whose life crosses paths with a poor young boy struggling to buy a pair of red shoes for his terminally ill mother. Have the tissues ready, this one's a tear-jerker.

Locally, WQED will be featuring Rick Sebak's new offering, "Happy Holidays in Pittsburgh," a celebration of food, holiday lights, folk dancing and diverse religious holidays. It also will present "Live From Studio A," an all-star jam featuring local musicians performing their favorite holiday songs. Both will be repeating throughout the holiday season.

For those of you looking for ambiance on Christmas Day, tune into "The Yule Log." Beginning at 9 a.m., the Hallmark channel will air six hours of a full-screen burning Yule log accompanied by Christmas music.
