ABC follows Reeve

ABC announced plans yesterday to chronicle actor Christopher Reeve's battle to walk again in three specials. The first will air this fall, with the following two airing over the next two years, continuing to chronicle Reeve's efforts to walk.

Reeve has been paralyzed since 1995 from a severe spinal cord injury.

KDKA lets Briggs go

KDKA-TV has opted not to renew the contract of Washington County bureau reporter Andy Briggs. He'll leave the station when his contract is up in early August.

Neither Briggs nor KDKA news director Al Blinke would comment on the reason for his departure.

"Andy did a nice job out there," Blinke said.

"They were pleased with the quality of my work," Briggs said. He's looking at new job possibilities in the area both inside and outside the TV industry.

Neither he nor Blinke would comment on whether Briggs has a non-compete clause in his contract that would keep him from going to work for another Pittsburgh TV station.

Briggs, a Pittsburgh native, joined KDKA in 1997 from WJAC in Johnstown.

Blinke said he hasn't decided how he'll replace Briggs.

"We're not going to close down the Washington bureau. Somebody from here may go down there on a daily basis or I may have a photographer work out of there and, depending on the story of the day, send out a reporter," Blinke said. "As of right now, I don't have anybody slated to go out there and be a bureau reporter."

Channel surfing

Rick Sebak's latest special, "Sandwiches That You Will Like," is set to premiere Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. on WQED/WQEX. ... Long a staple of FX, reruns of the comedy-drama "M*A*S*H" will move to Hallmark Channel in September 2003.
