KD's Kudzma to retire

Friday, March 29, 2002

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

KDKA-TV's Bob Kudzma, meteorologist for one of the country's highest-rated noon newscasts, is retiring from his daily weather duties.

KDKA announced the retirement in a press release late Wednesday. Kudzma will retire after the May sweeps period. Morning weathercaster Jon Burnett will take his place on the noon news.

Kudzma was on vacation yesterday and unavailable for comment. He has appeared on the station's noon newscast since 1979 and joined KDKA in November 1968.

Prior to that he was a meteorologist for United Airlines in Chicago and spent three years in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of captain, according to his KDKA bio. During his time with the Air Force he served as weather officer in Vietnam in the mid-'60s.

Kudzma graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and later received training in meteorology from Texas A&M University. He's a member of the American Meteorological Society.

Though retiring, Kudzma will continue to work for KDKA occasionally as a fill-in weathercaster.
