It was a move just about everyone at WPXI saw coming, but yesterday it became official: News director Jennifer Rigby will leave Cox-owned Channel 11 in early January to become news director at Cox-owned WSB in Atlanta. She jumps from market No. 21 to market No. 9.
Cox makes a habit of promoting from within the company. In Atlanta Rigby will replace Ray Carter, who was named Channel 11's general manager last month following the retirement of longtime WPXI boss John Howell.
Rigby said the opportunity to move within Cox to the company's flagship station was too good a chance to pass up.
"It's a terrific company that just fits my leadership style and my beliefs," Rigby said. "A lot of talent is here and there's a lot more to be done. It's an exciting market. I love this television station and I love Pittsburgh. The decision wasn't easy because of those things."
Carter said Channel 11 assistant news director Pat Maday will be in charge of the newsroom while the search for Rigby's replacement is conducted.
