New York lights up with holiday spirit

First lady Laura Bush tonight will flip the switch that lights the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The holiday tradition will be the climactic centerpiece of an hourlong special, "Christmas in Rockefeller Center," airing at 8 on NBC.

Also appearing with hosts Al Roker and Ann Curry from the "Today" show will be New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Musical guests will be Destiny's Child, Marc Anthony, Tony Bennett, Jessica Simpson, Vanessa Williams, John Mellencamp and New York City policeman Daniel Rodriguez.

The Radio City Rockettes will dance to "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," and U.S. Olympic pair skaters Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman will perform. Other celebrities rallying round the tree: Glenn Close, Kevin Bacon, Molly Shannon, Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanagh, Skipp Sudduth, Chris Bauer, Michael Beach, Anthony Ruivivar, Coby Bell, Amy Carlson and Jason Wiles.

The special also will pay tribute to the heroes of the World Trade Center tragedy and to New York's spirit.

Crime doesn't pay

ABC has canceled "Thieves." The Friday night romantic crime caper starred John Stamos and Melissa George and averaged only 7.3 million viewers.

Yankee host

New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter will host this week's "Saturday Night Live." He'll be joined by musical guests Shakira and Bubba Sparxxx.
