TV Note: WTAE admits mistake

Wednesday, November 21, 2001

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

Some viewers called to complain that WTAE-TV revealed the name of the victim in the alleged rape that occurred in a Primanti Bros. bathroom. Viewers said they saw the name of the victim on an evidence board in video shot through a window in the courtroom door.

Channel 4 news director Bob Longo acknowledged the mistake, which aired in a report at 5 p.m. Monday.

"Obviously that was not intentional," Longo said. He said the station's policy is generally not to name victims of rape, although it is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. "That video will not be repeated; in fact, we're purging that video from our system right now."
