Disaster relief telethon discussed

Wednesday, September 19, 2001

Television networks are talking about airing an industrywide telethon Friday night as a benefit to raise money for relief and recovery from the terrorist attacks.

TV Guide Online reports the unprecedented two-hour TV event -- expected to start at 9 p.m. -- would air simultaneously on as many broadcast and cable nets as possible.

Celebrities who may participate include Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Santana and Stevie Wonder.

Eight Discovery Channel networks, including the original Discovery, TLC and BBC America, will broadcast "Behind the Terror: Understanding the Enemy," a two-hour special from 9 to 11 tonight.

Forrest Sawyer hosts this profile of terrorism and the people behind it.
