TV, meet eBay

The Internet auction site eBay Inc. is branching out into television with a new syndicated series about collecting that could debut in 2002.

While "Antiques Roadshow," a popular PBS program co-sponsored by eBay, examines the history behind items, the new half-hour show will focus more on the personal stories of the collectors who connect on eBay and other venues.

"It will be looking at how collecting has simply taken off in the last several years and of course, eBay playing a central role in that collecting boom," eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove said.

Los Angeles-based LMNO Productions plans to co-produce the series, with syndication by Columbia TriStar Television Distribution, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment. It is expected to launch in the fall of 2002.

Pursglove said the half-hour show would be geared for airtime in the afternoon. EBay, which has 34 million registered users, also said it would offer local stations that air the program "innovative cross-promotions," such as links to the stations' Web sites.
