TV Note: Caruso changes channels

Wednesday, August 29, 2001

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

WTAE-TV reporter/producer Tonia Caruso will leave the station next month for a new job at WQED/WQEX. Caruso starts at the PBS station Sept. 17 and will work on the newsmagazine show "On Q," which returns with live daily broadcasts Oct. 1.

"It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up," Caruso said. "Reporters talk all the time about how we wish we could do longer-format pieces with more in-depth reporting, and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that."

Station manager B.J. Leber said Caruso will report two issue-oriented pieces a week. They'll run about 5 to 7 minutes long each. Reporter Michael Bartley will continue to report for "On Q" as well.

Caruso said she'll miss some aspects of commercial television and doesn't rule out returning to that realm someday.

"I spent some time in my consideration process calling agents and news directors, asking them if I was going down the wrong path by leaving commercial television and going in a new direction," Caruso said. "They all said this was something that would enhance me because the type of pieces I'll be doing are quality pieces that could open up many other doors in the future."
