KDKA offers news at 10 with lineup on WNPA

Wednesday, July 25, 2001

By Barbara Vancheri, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

KDKA has announced anchor teams and a start date for its 10 p.m. newscast, airing on its sister station, WNPA, Channel 19, Pittsburgh's UPN affiliate.

Jennifer Antkowiak and Ken Rice will anchor the 35-minute weeknight broadcast, with Larry Richert providing weather forecasts, while Don Cannon and Gabrielle DeRose will handle weekends.

The 10 p.m. newscast, being broadcast out of KDKA's Gateway Center studios and with the station's soon-to-grow staff, will debut Aug. 6. It will have its own set, now being built, graphics and music.

"It will be similar to a KD set, but different enough so the newscast has its own identity," KDKA news director Al Blinke says. He has hired two reporters to feed stories to the 10 p.m. report and KDKA's other evening shows.

"Even though the audience for UPN is a young audience, the goal of this newscast is to focus on a 25- to 54-year-old audience. ... It's important for people to remember as they tune in, it's not going to be MTV. I think if you're 65 or 18 or 35, you'll enjoy watching the newscast."

Blinke doesn't fear cannibalizing his crucial 11 p.m. audience. "I think there's an audience watching a 10 o'clock news, and there's an audience watching an 11 o'clock news." It will be the third 10 p.m. newscast in the market, joining PCNC and WPGH at that hour.

Antkowiak's new hours mean she no longer will appear on the noon news; Susan Barnett will add that job to her morning duties. None of this changes the 11 p.m. anchors, Ken Rice and Patrice King Brown, although viewers will regularly see Antkowiak presenting story packages on the late-night report.
