Film awards at MTV emphasize the offbeat

Tuesday, April 18, 2000

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

Correction/Clarification: (Published April 19, 2000) In the story on the MTV movie award nominations in yesterday’s Arts & Entertainment pages, the Web site given for a list of nominees and to vote was incorrect. The correct URL is http://mtv.excite.com

You know the Oscar winners; now start placing your bets for the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. Nominations were announced yesterday with "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" and "The Matrix" each garnering six nominations.

Both films are nominated for best movie along with "The Sixth Sense," "American Pie" and "American Beauty."

Unlike the Oscars and Golden Globes, the MTV Movie Awards go for more offbeat categories. New this year is the best musical performance category, with nominees Mike Myers and Verne Troyer ("Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"), Matt Stone and Trey Parker ("South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut"), Matt Damon, Jude Law and Fiorello ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") and Heath Ledger ("10 Things I Hate About You").

In the best villain category, nominees include Mike Myers ("Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"), Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Cruel Intentions"), Matt Damon ("The Talented Mr. Ripley"), Christopher Walken ("Sleepy Hollow") and Ray Park ("Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace").

Best kiss nominees include Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny ("Boys Don't Cry"), Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair ("Cruel Intentions"), Katie Holmes and Barry Watson ("Teaching Mrs. Tingle") and Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan ("Never Been Kissed").

For a complete list of nominees and to vote, visit http://mtv.excite.com.

The awards ceremony will be broadcast at 9 p.m. June 8.
