A guide to hitting the region's slopes

Sunday, November 09, 2003

By Lawrence Walsh, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

If the liquid precipitation the Quad-State area has received this year is any indication, snowsports enthusiasts should have plenty of white precipitation this winter for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing, snowshoeing and sledding.

See a map of ski slopes in the Quad State area listed in this article.

Traces of snow already have fallen at several of the 18 ski areas -- and one snowboard/ snowtubing park -- within a four-hour drive of Pittsburgh. Others are testing their snowmaking systems and waiting for the season's first sustained cold snap to make enough snow to open.

Although the traditional start of the season used to be Thanksgiving weekend, most areas wait until the first or second weekend in December to open.

Here's the information you'll need to compare the price of lift tickets, rental equipment and group ski lessons; the types of lifts; the number of slopes and trails; and the length of vertical drops. Also included are addresses, telephone numbers and Internet addresses.

Each area has Learn-to-Ski packages and/or Learn to Snowboard packages. Each area also offers lessons for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. Some areas have installed Magic Carpets to help beginners get back up the slope. Ask for an instructor certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America.

If you're skiing for a weekend or a week, ask about packages that include lift tickets and rental equipment. The savings can be considerable. Most areas also offer night skiing and provide child-care facilities.

Cross-country trails can be found at or near many of the following ski resorts. Some resorts allow cross-country skiers to buy tickets to use their chairlifts.

Be aware. The number of slopes and trails claimed by some areas includes crossovers and connecting trails, some of which are only a few hundred feet long -- if that. Could the people who counted them be numerically challenged?

Could be.
