Steelers Steelers cut 13 from roster

Saturday, August 23, 2003

By Ed Bouchette, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

The Steelers rewarded fullback Wes Ours for scoring the winning points Thursday night by releasing him yesterday morning.

Ours, a first-year pro from West Virginia University, was one of 13 players the Steelers cut as they whittled their roster to 70. They must release three more players by 4 p.m. Tuesday to reach the NFL mandatory minimum in the first round of cuts.

The minimum by Tuesday is 65 players, but the Steelers have roster exemptions for two who played in NFL Europe.

Ours caught a two-point conversion pass in the fourth quarter from rookie quarterback Brian St. Pierre to give the Steelers their first victory of the exhibition season, 15-14, against Dallas.

Among the other players released was quarterback Tim Levcik, who played at Robert Morris University and Ford City High School. Levcik's knee was sprained in the first practice at training camp, and he never got on the field again.

The rest of the cuts: defensive tackle Roy Attieh, linebacker Dantonio Burnett, cornerback Nashville Dyer, offensive tackle Jack Fadule, safety Rashad Faison, punter Glenn Pakulak, tight end Casey Poppinga, kicker Jonathan Ruffin, former Pitt wide receiver Lamar Slade, wide receiver Leonard Scott and quarterback Phil Stambaugh.

Teams must reduce their final rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. Aug. 31.
