Steelers Donahoe to get 2nd interview with Bills

Friday, December 29, 2000

By Ed Bouchette, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson interviewed Tom Donahoe Wednesday night for the job of general manager, and the two are scheduled to speak again next week.

Wilson interviewed Donahoe at his winter home in Palm Beach, Fla. Wilson fired his longtime general manager, John Butler, when he refused to accept a new contract.

Wilson reportedly offered Butler nearly $1 million annually to stay on the job. There have been reports that Wilson is prepared to turn over some of his own duties to his next general manager and perhaps even name him president and general manager.

Donahoe was fired in January as the Steelers' director of football operations with one year left on his contract. He turned down job opportunities in the NFL this year and has been working for ESPN.com in Bristol, Connecticut, answering online questions and providing analysis on games and teams online and on ESPN news.

The Steelers paid him $500,000 this year, the final year of his contract. Donahoe said he would like to work in the NFL again but that it would have to be the right situation.
