IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Clemson (3-1) at No. 11 Florida State (4-1) at Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Fla., 7:45 p.m. Thursday. TV: ESPN. This will be the fourth meeting between Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden and his son, Tommy, who coaches Clemson. Father leads 3-0 in the series. Meanwhile, Florida State officials have called of classes for Thursday and Friday, anticipating campus traffic problems because of the game.

IN THE DISTRICT

Duquesne senior WR Jeremy Conley is the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. An Allderdice High School graduate, he caught nine passes for a school record 245 yards and pulled in a pass for the winning score in a 35-28 victory against Dayton. His 245 yards betters Conley's old record of 231 set against VMI in 2000.

Waynesburg College QB Jeff Dumm, a Charleroi High School graduate, is the Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He tossed touchdown passes of 66, 62 and 13 yards, and ran 1 and 12 yards for scores in a 39-3 victory against Alfred. Westminster senior DB Joe Bianco of Bethel Park is the PAC Defensive Player of the Week. He had 10 solo tackles and helped out on four others in 24-13 victory against Allegheny.

Robert Morris LB James Noel is the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. A sophomore, Noel had 13 tackles, two for losses, and was in on a quarterback sack in a 15-10 victory against Monmouth.

Gannon's Owen Rhodes is the Independent Football Alliance Defensive Player of the Week. He was in on 13 tackles, including 11 solo stops, in a 35-21 victory at West Virginia State.

Penn State QB Zack Mills is the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week after passing for a school record 399 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-35 OT loss to Iowa. Mills shares the honor with Iowa QB Brad Banks.

NEWS & NOTES

Kentucky's coaches lost more than a football game at The Swamp at Florida -- they lost cash. Police at Florida are investigating a break-in to Kentucky's locker room in which a robber stole several hundred dollars from the wallets of Wildcats Coach Guy Morriss and his assistants. Kentucky lost to No. 6 Florida, 41-34, Saturday.

North Carolina State RB T.A. McLendon has a broken bone in his right wrist but is expected to recover in time to play in the Wolfpack's next game on Oct. 12. McLendon is scheduled to have surgery today. A screw will be inserted into his wrist to stabilize the fracture, and if the operation goes well, he should return to practice early next week, the school said. McLendon has 421 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.

Tennessee RB Cedric Houston, will miss Saturday's game against Arkansas because of a torn ligament in his left thumb. Coach Phillip Fulmer said Houston was hurt in the Volunteers' 35-14 win against Rutgers last weekend. He had surgery yesterday and will be out 10 days, which means he could be back in time to play against Georgia on Oct. 12.

Ohio State released Derek Morris from his national letter of intent yesterday. Morris, a 6-foot-6, 360-pound offensive lineman from Huntersville, N.C., signed with the Buckeyes in February but was never ruled academically eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse.

Eastern Kentucky Coach Roy Kidd will retire at the end of the season after 39 years and more than 300 victories. "I talked to people I know about retiring, and they told me that when you're ready, you'll know," said Kidd. "Well, I know." Kidd, 70, is 310-121-8, trailing Penn State's Joe Paterno (330 victories) and Florida State's Bobby Bowden (327) among active coaches. Kidd's teams reached the Division I-AA national championship game four consecutive years from 1979-82, winning titles in 1979 and 1982.
