WNBA Draft: Huskies' quartet occupies draft spotlight
Thursday, April 18, 2002 By Paul Zeise
The WNBA draft is tomorrow in New Jersey, and it will have a distinct Connecticut flavor to it.
That's because four members of the national champion Huskies, including McKeesport High School graduate Swin Cash, are expected to be among the top 10 players picked.
The other three are point guard Sue Bird, the NCAA player of the year, and forwards Asjha Jones and Tamika Williams.
"The ability of all three of the forwards from UConn to be so versatile is what makes them so desirable," said Renee Brown, the WNBA's vice president of player personnel. "They all are very athletic and can play a power forward's game, but all have good perimeter and ballhandling skills and passing skills as well.
"And Bird is a true point guard with tremendous vision and a great understanding of the game."
Other top players include Oklahoma guard Stacey Dales, Baylor center Danielle Crockrom, North Carolina guard Nikki Teasley and Tennessee center Michelle Snow.
Penn State center Rashana Barnes also has a chance of being drafted.
The Seattle Storm owns the first pick of the draft, which is four rounds, with Detroit picking next. Washington has the third and fourth picks followed by Portland, Minnesota, Orlando, Cleveland, Charlotte and Houston.
