Monday, June 02, 2003

By Patricia Sheridan, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

The cluster of autograph seekers on the sidewalk outside of the Pittsburgh Hilton on Friday night testified to the mega-wattage inside.

Rocky Bleier, Lynn Swann, Joe Greene, Chuck Noll and John Stallworth

The Mel Blount Youth Home All Star Celebrity Roast brought out the sports legends to honor Mean Joe Greene, a sweetheart of a former Steeler who let himself be roasted by Lynn Swann, Andy Russell, Ralph Berlin and Randy Grossman. Fellow Hall of Famers, including John Stallworth, Franco Harris and coach Chuck Noll, were among the 1,000 guests who came to support Blount's work in helping young male victims of child abuse and neglect through his Washington County group home and emergency shelter. Rocky Bleier served as master of ceremonies for the event, organized by Blount's wife, TiAnda. It began with a cocktail reception and live auction, continued with a dinner of grilled tenderloin and ended with dancing to the House of Soul Band.

Among those lifting a Coke to Greene were Dan and Pat Rooney and Art and Greta Rooney, Ernie Holmes, Dwight White, Dwayne Woodruff, Mark Malone, John Banaszak, J.T. Thomas, Robin Cole, Carol Lockett, Todd and Christine Lachman, William Hinchey, Gary Matson, Denice Dennison, George Morgan, Calvin Rodwell, Janet Rich, Steve Morelli, Babe and Joe Gordon, Blount's son Norris Blount and former youth home resident Ben McDonald.
