Seen The Heart of America Ball 2002

Monday, February 25, 2002

By Marylynn Uricchio, Post-Gazette SEEN Editor

The Heart of America was beating to a patriotic tempo Saturday night at the American Heart Association Heart Ball 2002.

From the giant flag that draped the stage behind In The Mood (a band that put everybody in a great one) to the sparkler centerpieces on star-spangled linens, the evening's red, white and blue theme made the Westin Convention Center ballroom as festive as the Fourth. Chair Kristen Lane (with Mark) and division director Marjorie Thomas (with Tony) worked with a volunteer committee and Robert Miles Design Concepts to create a lively, elegant evening attended by more than 600 guests. Andy Russell (with Cindy Ellis) served as honorary chair, Dr. James Magovern (with Betsy) served as medical chair for the event, and KDKA's Bob Pompeani (with Lisa) emceed.

Proceeds from the benefit help fund the fight against heart disease and stroke (the AHA has served 1.3 million just in our community), so guests bid high and bid often when it came to the silent and live auctions. Dinner was an all-American delight, with corn chowder, sea bass or filet mignon, wonderful blue cheese potato cakes and, for dessert, tri-colored baked Alaska served with sparklers. EMT nurse Darnella Wilson sang the national anthem magnificently, and soprano Demareus Cooper performed a patriotic medley that led to a rousing grand finale -- a blizzard of red, white and blue giant confetti.
