Following is a step-by-step recounting of the shooting rampage in Wilkinsburg yesterday that left two people dead and three others wounded. It ended with the arrest of Ronald Taylor, 39.
About 11:15 a.m. -- A man is shot in an apartment building at 1208 Wood St. in Wilkinsburg. Police are told that the gunman is still in the building. Simultaneously, firefighters respond to a report of a fire on the fifth floor of the building.
About 11:20 a.m. -- Another person is shot, this time at the Burger King restaurant at Penn and Pitt avenues, next to the East Busway. Moments later, police begin receiving calls about multiple gunshot victims at the McDonald's restaurant a block away at 430 Penn Ave.
11:25 a.m. -- A man pulls a gun on Wilkinsburg officers on West Street, fires two shots and ducks into the Penn-West Building at the intersection of Penn Avenue and West Street.
11:30 a.m. -- More police move into the area, evacuating the building and blocking streets. The suspect runs from office to office on the building's first floor, terrorizing people in a doctor's office and in an adult day-care center.
11:51 a.m. -- The first shooting victim, John Kroll, 55, of Cabot, dies at UPMC Presbyterian during surgery.
Noon -- Police trap the suspect in a corner of the building, and Pittsburgh police Sgt. John Fisher begins negotiating with him from a spot 40 feet away.
Noon--2 p.m. -- Fisher and the suspect, now identified as Ronald Taylor, 39, talk. Taylor says he's going to commit suicide because he doesn't want his mother to see him spend the rest of his life in jail. Fisher replies that Taylor's mother wouldn't want to see him dead, either.
2:15 p.m. -- Taylor slides a gun and a knife down the hallway to Fisher and surrenders.
