Boaters urged to heed regatta restrictions

Thursday, August 05, 1999

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Craft manned by U.S. Coast Guard, Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and Pittsburgh River Rescue officers will be out in force during the regatta.

All law enforcement boats will display flashing blue lights and will be assisted in managing the waterways by other boats displaying yellow "Regatta Patrol" banners and yellow flashing lights at night.

Here are the restrictions:

All boats must stay out of the area roughly bounded by the West End Bridge, the Fort Duquesne Bridge and the Fort Pitt Bridge during Saturday's fireworks display.

The Allegheny River between the Carnegie Science Center and the Sixth Street Bridge will be off-limits during boat races.

The entire event area is a no-wake zone. In addition, boaters are asked to travel at a no-wake speed while heading to river locks for the trip home.

Boaters are also asked to observe some common sense measures:

Make sure you have enough gas, because you might be sitting in boat traffic for awhile.

Don't throw trash overboard.

Stay off the marine radio if possible.

Make sure you display the proper running lights at night.
