Bullington close to signing Wednesday, October 30, 2002 By Robert Dvorchak, Post-Gazette Sports Writer
The Pirates are on the verge of signing pitcher Bryan Bullington, the first pick in the amateur draft in June, and could announce the agreement as early as today.
Bullington, 22, compiled a 29-11 record in three years at Ball State University. Bullington, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-handed pitcher, opted not to return to college this fall, an indication that he wanted to sign a contract with the Pirates.
Negotiations dragged on as Bullington waited to see what kind of money players drafted behind him were getting.
"We've been making some progress," Pirates General Manager Dave Littlefield said yesterday. "He wants to play professional baseball sooner rather than later. There's been some progress, but nothing has been completely finalized."
