IN-HOUSE

Roy Smith

Named interim GM yesterday ... 39 years old ... Was Cam Bonifay's assistant general manager/player personnel since October 1998, and was a special assistant to Bonifay in 1997 ... Pirates scout 1994-97 ... Was 30-31 as a pitcher in eight-year major-league career with the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles.


John Sirignano

Assistant general manager/baseball operations since October 1996 ... 40 ... Is responsible for negotiating contracts, waiver and rule compliance and administering budgets ... Earned master's degree in sports management at Robert Morris College.


Paul Tinnell

Director of player development ... 43 ... Has been with Pirates since 1990, starting as a scout, then scouting director until assuming his current position in 1996 ... Worked briefly as a scouting supervisor for the Cleveland Indians ... Coached college baseball for nine years.


Mickey White

Director of scouting ... 41 ... He also is in charge of the club's Latin American operations ... Came to the Pirates in 1998 after three years as assistant to the general manager for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays ... He also had scouting positions with the Indians, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.


OUTSIDE THE ORGANIZATION

Mike Berger

Assistant to the general manager/director of pro scouting for the Montreal Expos ... 38 ... Won the club's award for scouting excellence in 1998 ... Played baseball with Dan Marino at Central Catholic High School in Oakland and still lives in Pittsburgh ... Was taken by the Pirates in the 1980 amateur draft and played in the Pirates', Montreal Expos' and Texas Rangers' organizations until 1991 ... Coached and managed in the minors until 1994 ... Son of former Pirates public relations director Jack Berger.


Paul Depodesta

Assistant general manager of the Oakland Athletics responsible for player acquisitions and contracts ... 28 ... Hired by Athletics in 1998 after quickly rising through the Indians' scouting ranks ... Harvard graduate.


Michael Hill

Director of Player Development for the Colorado Rockies ... 30 ... Has been with Rockies since 1999 after working four years in scouting and player development for the Devil Rays ... Played three seasons in the minors for Texas and Cincinnati ... Baseball America magazine in 1999 named him as one of the 10 people in baseball who will become prominent in the first decade of the 21st century ... Harvard graduate.


Tony LaCava

Montreal Expos' director of player development ... 39 ... He is responsible for the club's farm system ... Was national scouting supervisor for the Atlanta Braves in 2000 ... Was a scout with the Anaheim Angels for 11 years ... Another Central Catholic graduate, LaCava lives in Oakmont.


Dayton Moore

Director of international and professional scouting for the Atlanta Braves ... 33 ... Joined the Braves' front office in 1994 ... Was an assistant baseball coach at George Mason University while pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration.


Jack Zduriencik

Director of scouting with the Milwaukee Brewers since 1999 ... 50 ... Supervises the Brewers' amateur scouting staff ... Was the Pirates' director of scouting from 1991-93 and selected Jason Kendall in the first round of the 1992 free-agent draft ... Also has been an executive with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets ... A graduate of California University of Pennsylvania.


THE USUAL (TALK SHOW) SUSPECTS

John Hart

The two-time Sporting News baseball executive of the year is stepping down as general manager of the Indians at the end of the season ... 52 ... Turned a perennial loser into a perennial contender during his 10-year tenure ... He would command big money and a team trying to hire him probably would have to buy out his five-year consulting contract with the Indians.


Jim Leyland

Former Pirates, Marlins and Rockies manager scouts major-league teams for the St. Louis Cardinals ... 56 ... Said last week he wouldn't be interested in Pirates GM job if it was open.


Kevin Malone

Fired earlier this season as general manager of the Dodgers ... 43 ... Built powerful team as the Expos' GM in 1994-95, but had mixed results with the Dodgers ... Reputation took a hit after he was accused of challenging a San Diego Padres fan to a fight.
