Pirates Pirates Report: 4/10/01

Tuesday, April 10, 2001

Compiled by Paul Meyer

LOOKING AHEAD

Pirates vs. Reds, 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, PNC Park. TV: Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh. Radio: KDKA-AM (1020). Jimmy Anderson (0-1) will start for the Pirates against the Reds' Elmer Dessens (1-0).

NOTEBOOK

Each Pirate yesterday wore a No. 8 next to the P on his cap in memory of Willie Stargell, who died early yesterday morning. Perhaps as soon as the game tomorrow night, the Pirates will have another way to honor him. "We have a lot of options we're kicking around," Manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Willie was kind of symbolic with the stars on the hats." The 1979 World Series champion Pirates wore hats adorned with gold stars passed out by Stargell for making big plays and/or getting big hits and pitching good games. "I'm hoping that's what we end up doing," McClendon said.

Cincinnati CF Ken Griffey Jr., yet to start a game this season because of a left hamstring problem, probably won't start a game in this series, either. Griffey is available to pinch-hit, but he might not start a game until the Reds return home next week. Griffey pinch-hit with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning yesterday and flied to center. He's 0 for 6 with three strikeouts this season.

There was some talk about John Wehner starting for the Pirates in their first game at PNC Park yesterday, but he didn't. "I didn't think [it would happen]," said Wehner, a former Carrick star who hit the last home run and made the last out in Three Rivers Stadium. "It would have been awesome, but I don't think it would have been fair for one of the regular players to not start just because I'm from here."

Terry Mulholland also didn't start for the Pirates yesterday. Mulholland had been scheduled to start the first game at PNC Park, but he's on the disabled list because of a strained ligament in his left knee. "I'm disappointed big-time," said Mulholland, from Uniontown. "I was very much looking forward to making this start."

The Reds had their own traditional pomp-laden opening day in Cincinnati on April 2. Then they helped open Miller Park in Milwaukee last Friday night. Then they had yesterday's ceremony-filled PNC Park opening. "We've done it three times now," Boone said. "We're kind of ready to get into the normal routine of the season and not running out to the foul line to be introduced. But [PNC Park] is really nice. It's right up there with the neatest stadiums in the league."

Jimmy Anderson, scheduled to start for the Pirates tomorrow night, is 0-3 in six career appearances (four starts) against the Reds. A left-hander, Anderson has allowed 21 earned runs in 26 1/3 innings.
