Pirates Report: 10/2/00

Monday, October 02, 2000

By Paul Meyer, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

NOTEBOOK

Yesterday's sellout crowd of 55,351 brought the 2000 season total to 1,748,908, the fifth-largest total in Three Rivers Stadium history. The all-time total for the 2,407 regular-season games at the stadium was 41,266,476. The stadium-closing series with Chicago drew 138,937, the largest total for a three-date series in the facility's history. The Pirates were 1,324-1,081(and two ties) at Three Rivers.

General Manager Cam Bonifay said yesterday he'll discuss the status of the Pirates' coaches at today's media session at noon. However, it's believed Bonifay officially will declare all the coaches' jobs open. After that, whomever is the new Pirates manager probably will decide which coaches, if any, will be back.

Gene Lamont will have his final session with the media at 11 a.m. today, but yesterday he offered some hints about what he'll say. Yes, he wants to manage again. "There will be some jobs open," he said. "I'll look at that. I don't think any manager wants any manager to get fired, but that's the way it is every year."

Lamont planned to watch yesterday's postgame ceremonies on television in his office. "If this whole thing was [just] about closing Three Rivers Stadium, well ... but it's not. As far as I'm concerned, my duties are over when the game's over." What about the coaches? "They can do whatever they want to do. I'm going to do what I want to do."

Jason Kendall won't hit the surf in California until at least tomorrow. Today, he'll have surgery on his right cheek. A pickoff throw by Houston's Chris Holt struck his cheek Sept. 14 at Enron Field. ... Infielder Abraham Nunez's wife, Maria, gave birth to the couple's first child Thursday. Son Isaac weighed in at 7 pounds. ... Josias Manzanillo's wild pitch in the sixth inning was the Pirates' 67th of the season, a club record. The 1988 staff threw 66. ... John Vander Wal's double in the fifth inning was the Pirates' 320th of the season, a club record. The 1996 team hit 319. ... The Pirates were 3-17 in home day games. They lost their last 13, winning their last day game at home May 14 over Milwaukee. ... The Pirates were 16-14 in the final month of the season, their first winning final month since they were 21-8 in 1992.
