Penguins add fifth goaltender
Saturday, August 23, 2003 By Dejan Kovacevic, Post-Gazette Sports Writer
The Penguins yesterday signed goaltender Martin Brochu, who spent last year in the Russian Superleague, to a minor-league contract.
That gives the organization five goaltenders under contract, one more than needed to fill the rosters in Pittsburgh and the AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre.
Brochu, 30, has appeared in eight NHL games during a 10-year professional career. He was the AHL's most valuable player in 2000, helping Portland win the Calder Cup. Last season, he played eight games for Cherepovets and posted a 1.80 goals-against average as his team's backup.
The Penguins' other goaltenders under contract are Johan Hedberg, Sebastien Caron, Jean-Sebastien Aubin and Andy Chiodo.
