Center Alexandre Daigle is planning to sign a tryout contract with the Penguins soon, the Quebec television network RDS reported last night.
Daigle, 27, was the first overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft but never lived up to expectations and has been out of hockey since failing to stick with the New York Rangers in the 1999-2000 season. In 459 games with four NHL teams -- the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Rangers -- he had 100 goals and 141 assists.
He had been expected to attend the San Jose Sharks' training camp, also on a tryout basis, but RDS reported that he would choose the Penguins instead because of the presence of fellow French Canadian Mario Lemieux.
Neither Daigle nor his agent, Pat Brisson, could be reached for comment.
An NHL player on a tryout contract must be signed before the end of training camp, or that team loses his rights. The Penguins had a similar deal last year with right winger Stephane Richer and ended up signing him to a one-year contract.
