This week's prospect: Defenseman, Brian Gaffaney.

Position: Defenseman

Size: 6 feet 5, 235 pounds

Born: Oct. 4, 1977, Alexandria, Minn.

Acquired: Penguins' second-round pick, 44th overall, in 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

2000-01 club: St. Cloud State University, NCAA.

Statistics: One goal, one assist, 15 penalty minutes, plus-7 rating in 16 games.

Scouting report: One of biggest players in all of college hockey. ... A top-flight, stay-at-home type who has emerged as one of best defensemen in Western Collegiate Hockey Association in his senior year. ... Has only 15 career points in four years at St. Cloud. ... Left-handed shot. ... Scored first goal of season Friday in 6-3 victory at Minnesota-Duluth. ... Huskies are 15-4-1 overall, 10-4 in WCHA. ... Was projected fourth-rounder in 1997 draft, but Penguins liked him enough to take him two rounds earlier. ... Has shown willingness to drop gloves with WCHA's top fighters.
