Ex-Apollo officer ordered to trial on exposure charges

Thursday, August 31, 2000

By Judy Laurinatis, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

A former police officer in Apollo has been ordered to stand trial on charges that he exposed himself to a 17-year-old girl while on duty.

At a preliminary hearing yesterday, Kevin J. Lukart, 30, of Greensburg, pleaded not guilty to attempted indecent assault, corruption of minors, indecent exposure, open lewdness and official oppression.

State police said Lukart was to drive the teen-ager to her father's house in Armstrong County after midnight on July 5. The girl and two boys were walking along Sheridan Road in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, when a local policeman stopped to find out why they were out so late.

Police from neighboring communities were called and Lukart was assigned to drive the girl home.

The girl testified that she and Lukart engaged in small talk as he drove her home. After Lukart took a brief side trip to "check something out," the girl said he then drove her to the town where her father lives.

The girl said Lukart drove past her father's house to a junkyard at the end of the street and stopped. She said he asked her how "wild and crazy" she was because she'd "have to be crazy" to be on Sheridan Road at that time of the night.

They got out of the police car and went behind the vehicle where the girl said Lukart asked her to show him her breasts. She testified that she told him she was engaged and "couldn't do that." The girl said Lukart then exposed himself and asked her to perform a sexual act, which she refused to do. She then started walking toward her father's house.

The teen said Lukart then pulled up in the cruiser and asked her if she were going to tell anyone about the incident. After she told him she wouldn't, he told her to contact him if she ever got into trouble again.

He then gave her his name.

Lukart has been free on his own recognizance since his arrest Aug. 12. He no longer works for the Apollo Police Department.
