Applying for a historical marker
Wednesday, July 18, 2001
Anyone can apply for a historical marker in Pennsylvania. The program is open to every state citizen, but the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission imposes some tough standards when it comes to selecting a site.
Old St. Luke's Church, built in 1852, receives a historical marker
Then 18 copies of the completed nomination form, along with any attachments, must be submitted to the Historical Marker Program
The applicant also must provide a historical overview and specify the historical significance of the person, event or site nominated.
Documentation attesting to the site's significance must be included in the application, which will be reviewed by historical experts from across the state. The deadline for applications for 2002 is Dec. 14, 2001.
Although the requirements are strict, don't be discouraged. Pennsylvania is a state rich with historic events and people who have made significant contributions in their lives.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Marker Program can be reached at Historical Marker Program, Division of History, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Commonwealth Keystone Building, Plaza Level, 400 North St., Harrisburg PA 17120-0053. The phone number is (717) 787-3034.
