EAST HILLS: Teen to be sentenced
A criminal homicide charge was dropped this week against a juvenile, but a judge found him delinquent on a firearms violation.

Pittsburgh police accused Eric Patterson, 17, of killing Michael Givens, 21, of Homewood, who was shot 13 times on Nov. 9 behind a house on East Hills Drive. Police said his assailants fired 22 shots from two guns during the attack.

In May, Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Donna Jo McDaniel granted a motion by Patterson's attorney, Warner Mariani, to decertify the adult charges against his client. At the time, Patterson, of East Hills, was 16.

On Wednesday, McDaniel tried Patterson under juvenile law.

Patterson, who is in the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, will be sentenced Tuesday for the firearms violation.

Mariani said his client was home at the time of the shooting. He said the judge found that a bag containing three handguns used in the killing had at some point been in Patterson's possession. Patterson's high school lunch ticket was found inside the bag, Mariani said.

Also charged in the killing of Givens is Devon Cleveland, 20, of Wilkinsburg.

Mike Manko, a spokesman for the district attorney, said his office does not comment on juvenile cases.
