Family Film Guide: 'Life or Something Like It'

Sunday, April 28, 2002

"Life or Something Like It"

Rated: PG-13.

Best for: Moviegoers 12 or 13 and up.

What you should know: Angelina Jolie plays Lanie Kerrigan, a Seattle television reporter who is told by a street prophet that she will die in a week. As she fears his prediction will come true, she re-examines her life, including her engagement to a Seattle Mariners player, a rancorous relationship with a cameraman (Edward Burns) and her ambition to work in network TV.

Offensive language: Lanie lets the f-word slip, and others use a few mild expletives.

Drug/alcohol use: When Lanie revisits the street seer, she brings him a bottle of cheap wine. A despondent Lanie gets drunk and does something she normally would not while reporting a story. The next day, she's offered the "hair of the dog" to cure her hangover.

Sex: Two singles obviously sleep together, and a brief reference is made to someone having a "sex addiction."

Violence/scariness: The prospect of Lanie dying in a week is obviously disturbing. An airplane runs into turbulence, and a street encounter turns violent as shots are fired.
