This was yet another of several portrait assignments every photographer gets on a weekly basis. I was wondering how I could make this picture look any different from the last piano picture I had taken just a few weeks before. After entering the family's house, I realized that this picture was all about communicating the mood of the article I was illustrating.

Lekha Tummalapalli, 12, of Fox Chapel had performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City just days before, and the environment in which she practices her piano skills reflected that big-stage atmosphere. The assignment gave me a chance to look beyond the literal image we take so many times, and it taught me never to underestimate a portrait assignment.

An unmanned camera took this shot of Scott Blasey of The Clarks singing at Nick's Fat City: Because taking a photo of the band on stage during a concert would be obtrusive, I had mounted a camera on stage at Nick's Fat City before the show and set it off with a remote control as they performed.

As a photojournalist, I'm never sure where my camera will take me. On this day, it was leading me to the home of a New Order Amish family in northwestern Maryland, part of a project to document religions in our area. The visit had been pre-arranged days earlier, but, since many Amish won't be photographed, this was most likely to be one of my most challenging visits. I expected to stay only a few minutes, but it turned out that I stayed four hours. In this photo, Maria Duff, 4, standing on the porch of her grandfather's home, waves to relatives returning from church.

After enjoying one of the best Sunday dinners I've ever had, I ventured across the street and climbed into a horse-drawn buggy with minister Sam Yoder. As I made photographs and scribbled information on an envelope, he turned to me and said, "Just put us down as Christian."

Through a curtain of sun-steamed water, the South Franklin Volunteer Fire Department team of Dave Talpas, Tom Hutson, Eric Chenney, Chris Block and Capt. Jerry Hickman participated in the Battle of the Barrel Competition at the Washington County Fireman's Association's convention. The events also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Houston Volunteer Fire Department.
