PG Oscar contest winner taking husband to Hollywood

Tuesday, March 28, 2000

By Rebecca Sodergren, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

Kathleen Drapchak was hoping maybe she'd win some movie tickets in this year's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Academy Awards Contest so that she and her husband could carve out some time alone together.

Little did she guess she'd win the grand prize of a trip to Hollywood. Now she and husband Donald, who works for State Farm Insurance, will have a whole week together.

"This is really wonderful," Drapchak, 52, gushed on the phone when she was notified. Drapchak is occupied much of the time by caring for her widowed mother, who lives in a home just behind hers in Duquesne. "We haven't gone on a trip for quite a while. This is going to be a real blast for us."

Drapchak was one of 95 people who submitted perfect ballots for this year's contest, cosponsored by National Amusements. As per contest rules, prize winners were drawn at random from among those perfect ballots.

The contest drew more than 7,000 entries. It's the first time in the history of the contest that more than a handful of entrants submitted perfect ballots -- which may speak to the predictability of this year's Academy Awards.

Drapchak's prize is a trip to Hollywood that includes round-trip air fare for two on American Airlines, six days and five nights at a Howard Johnson's Hotel and Inn, a six-day car rental and VIP tickets to a taping of the CBS comedy "Becker," starring Ted Danson. Drapchak was especially excited about the last item, noting that she and her husband love "Becker."

Second-prize winner Ruth Jarosz of Whitehall wins a year of National Amusements passes for two, good locally at any Showcase Cinemas locations, and a prize package from VH1.

Slippery Rock resident Marylee Medve won the third prize, a studio prize package of film-related merchandise.

A four-pack of movie passes went to each of the 25 runners-up: Adrienne Kuny and Karen Hatcher, both of Carnegie; Fred Albitz of Edgewood; Karen S. Arlet of Bridgeville; Marian Bollman of Baldwin; Don Brashear of Ingram; Ruth Thompson of Cheswick; Linda Clements of Gibsonia; Wendy Compernolle of Wilkinsburg; Lee Ann Dobson of Dormont; Larry Drill of Marianna; Marilyn Dusmal of Finleyville; Diane Gargarella of Whitehall; Karen A. Gieske of Wilkins; Sandy Goetze of Zelienople; Darla Greene of Cranberry; Helen Guerra of Avalon; Robert W. Kline of Brackenridge; Susan Liparulo of Butler; Phyllis Masciola of Scott; Janette Partezana of Squirrel Hill; Mrs. G.L. Skipper of Rankin; Mary Morgan Smith of McKees Rocks; Elaine Sofis of Mt. Lebanon; and Stanley C. Walker of Pittsburgh.
