The Best of 1999/Theater, Art, Dance, Movies and Music

Friday, December 31, 1999

At last we come to the final day of 1999, when the Post-Gazette arts and entertainment critics hand out their picks for the best of year. Speaking for the members of the A&E department, we couldn't be happier.

Just maybe we have heard the last of a month long debate on the merits of "American Beauty" (then again, we're still arguing about the first "Austin Powers" movie, so there's no real reason for optimism).

While some of the critics clearly struggled with their choices, for others it was more clear-cut, not to mention more autonomous, No other gallery or museum was going to top the Carnegie International; no other music group was going to best the Symphony's "Gurrelieder"; not even the Rolling Stones were going to touch the Murder City Devils; and, wall, let's not give any more of this away ...

It would be nice to ponder the lists and declare the 1999 was the year of the ... something. But it's rarely possible to do. The last year of the '90s was as diverse and complicated as the rest of the decade.

Just like that movie with Kevin Spacey.
