In 24 seasons, through June 1999, the Public produced 137 mainstage shows (including one non-subscription extra). The most popular playwrights have been:
SHAKESPEARE, 8 productions of 7 plays.
AUGUST WILSON, 7 of 6 plays.
ATHOL FUGARD AND TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, 4 each.
COWARD, CHEKHOV, SHAW AND ALBEE, 3 each.
The 137 shows include 13 by black playwrights. Seven were by women, unless we include three partial writer credits on musicals. Speaking of musicals, PPT has done 13.

A powerful force often not considered by audiences is the director. They tend to work in streaks. Not surprisingly, the three most used were PPT artistic directors -- and artistic director designate Ted Pappas also has a good head start.
LARRY ARRICK (artistic director 1982-84), 13 shows (1982-86)
EDDIE GILBERT (artistic director 1993-99), 13 (1993-99). Two more shows in 1999-2000 will move him to the top of the list with 15.
BEN SHAKTMAN (artistic director 1975-82), 12 (1975-81)
LEE SANKOWICH, 10 (1985-93)
CLAUDE PURDY, 6 (1989-94)
TED PAPPAS, above, (artistic director designate), 6 (1994-99)
PHILIP MINOR, 5 (1984-89)
PETER BENNETT, 5 (1984-92)
JOHN GOING, 4 (1975-79)
TERRY SCHREIBER, 4 (1978-79)
SUSAN EINHORN, 4 (1984-96)
MEL SHAPIRO, 4 (1983-91)
MAUREEN HEFFERNAN, 4 (1988-94)
In all, 14 shows had black directors. (Claude Purdy is the only black director to have directed a non-black play, "Night of the Iguana.") Just 11 were directed by women.
