Pirates fans encouraged to hit the trail

Tuesday, August 27, 2002

By Bob Batz Jr., Post-Gazette Staff Writer

Paddle or pedal?

Those are the possibilities for passage to Thursday afternoon's Pirates game at PNC Park.

Friends of the Riverfront are hosting this alliterative Pittsburgh promotion, which includes a picnic and press event to push alternative transportation.

The outing starts at the Three Rivers Rowing Association boathouse on Washington's Landing. Participants' alternatives are to either pedal bicycles down the riverside trail or paddle kayaks or canoes down the Allegheny River itself. Either way, you can lock up your person-powered vehicle at bike racks at the ballpark or new canoe/kayak storage racks at the north end of the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

The kayak racks, installed in July, are the first of what will be several that are to be part of the Allegheny River Water Trail. They're also "the only free parking for miles," Friends of the Riverfront quips in its calendar.

The group plans to meet on the island at 11 a.m. and take its time getting to the ballpark for the 12:35 p.m. start against the Atlanta Braves. Canoes and kayaks will be available for those who don't have their own. Friends members go for free; nonmembers pay $15.

For more information or to reserve a spot, call 412-488-0212 or e-mail jennifer@friendsoftheriverfront.org.
